Villa Real Mexican Hot Chocolate

$12 USD

Villa Real chocolate from Oaxaca is made with simple ingredients; just cocoa butter, sugar, almond, and other nuts and spices. The result? The most delicious cup of Mexican Hot Chocolate you've ever tasted.

Legend has it that cocao was a gift that the god Quetzalcoatl made for men. The rulers and elite warriors of ancient Mesoamerica consumed cocoa in a variety of ways, using it as food, drink, medicine, and even as the official currency. The scientific name of the cacao tree is Theobroma cacao, whose Latin meaning is "food of the gods."

Mexicans have made "aguada de cocoa," or chocolate water for generations. Each region has its own method of preparation. It was a sacred liquor of the gods and originally they made it 100% pure, meaning it was quite bitter. After the arrival of the Spaniards (who brought cows with them), they added sugar and milk, making it the luxury drink we know today. Chocolate from Villa Real retains that unique aroma and original flavor. Warm up the milk in our Hot Chocolate Jug and mix it together with our hand-carved molinillo whisks, and you will discover why this delicious drink has such a storied history.
