KAWS Pinocchio & Jiminy Cricket Vinyl Figure 2010

$20,000 USD

The beloved storybook character and one of the most reimagined characters in the pantheon of children’s literature, Pinocchio, and his trusted companion, Jiminy Cricket, who was appointed by the Blue Fairy as his conscience, written by the Italian writer, Carlo Callodi. The fictional and prolific tale speaks of an elderly woodcarver named Geppetto, who, upon wanting a child, carved one from wood. Here, KAWS presents an adaptation of the Disney version. Wearing the classic’s characteristic overalls and collared shirt, KAWS amends the image with his iconic X branding. Visible is the character’s long nose, which is commonly known to grow in size anytime the character tells a lie.

Brian Donnelly, the ex-Disney illustrator better known as KAWS, created his first vinyl toy in 1999: an eight-inch “Companion” whose round belly, noodly limbs, and white gloves immediately reminded viewers of the cartoons made famous by his former workplace. The limited edition toy, produced in collaboration with the Japanese brand Bounty Hunter, reflected KAWS’s desire to make his work more accessible to the public. In the years since, KAWS has rendered most of his signature characters in three dimensions, including Chum, Bendy, and Blitz, as well as his renditions of iconic cartoons like Tweety, Snoopy, and Pinocchio.
